What is the Difference Between Lifecare and Rental at this Retirement Community in PA?
Our research has shown that most people move to Sherwood Oaks because of Lifecare. They want to know that they have guaranteed healthcare from a quality provider at this retirement community in PA, and are willing to pay a refundable entrance fee for this assurance. Lifecare gives seniors peace of mind because they don’t have to worry about paying high “out of pocket” costs for nursing care.
However, many seniors want all of the amenities of Sherwood Oaks without the entrance fee, and they choose our Rental program. The Rental program gives residents a beautiful place to live and all of our amenities with a month-to-month rental contract. Rental fees are affordable, and seniors choosing this option enjoy priority access to continuing care, if needed in the future.

Tom Shepard visited 15 retirement communities, took copious notes, and built a weighted decision analysis in Excel. So he was pretty certain he’d made the right decision when he moved to this retirement community pa, Sherwood Oaks. “I found Sherwood Oaks to be the best in terms of facility, services and financial strength of some 15 retirement communities I visited,” says Tom. “An added advantage is that it’s close to my daughter’s home.”
His biggest concern, however, was whether he would tolerate the northern winters at retirement communities in pa after a lifetime of living in the south.
Tom has found this retirement community pa, Sherwood Oaks, to be even more than he expected. He enjoys singing, reading, woodworking and physical fitness activities, and a very warm winter coat has helped him adjust to Pittsburgh’s climate.

With effective mortgage rates below 4%, and Pittsburgh’s unemployment rate below 7%, it may not be as challenging as you think to sell your home and move to retirement communities in pa. Real Estate in Pittsburgh is booming, very few homes are on the market for longer than 30 to 45 days. The theory of supply and demand is never more prevalent than today in the real estate market. Today’s sellers are netting a larger percentage from the sale of their homes because of low interest rates, and the strong supply of first time buyers and transferees.
If you are like most Sherwood Oaks clients, it’s been years since you’ve sold a home. So, it may be interesting for you to learn that you should have a home inspection before putting your house on the market. This gives you more control over the sale when the sales agreement is presented.
At this retirement community pa, we at Sherwood Oaks have been helping seniors sell their homes for many years. Our Preferred Realtor program puts you in touch with a realtor with specialized training. Once you have listed your house, you may want to use an estate and household sales specialist, and we can recommend a good one. Another person you can take advantage of – for free – is an organizer who Sherwood Oaks pays for. He will help you clean out attics, garages and closets, and also be present on the day of your move to unpack and hang your pictures. Call us for more information! 800 642-2217
It is important for seniors to ask careful questions as they consider which retirement community is best suited to their needs. Some recent newspaper stories have asked if retirement communities in PA are financially stable. Sherwood Oaks willingly answers inquiries about our financial stability as a retirement community-PA facility. We believe that Sherwood Oaks is among the financially strongest retirement communities in the region because:
- The Sherwood Oaks Retirement Community has successfully operated for 28 years. We are proud of the good reputation that we’ve established, especially in the North Hills and Cranberry Township areas.
- The Sherwood Oaks audited 2009 financial statements show positive net assets of $5.5 million. Audited statements for FY 2010 will be released soon, and they are expected to show strong operating income, positive investment returns, and continued investment in capital assets.
- Resident satisfaction at Sherwood Oaks, as measured by an outside consulting firm, shows that residents have rated Sherwood Oaks as exceeding national benchmark scores for many years.
- The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center UPMC is our parent company and one of the most financially sound organizations in the region.
- Sherwood Oaks is one of the few retirement communities PA has that is fully accredited by the Continuing Care Accreditation Commission, www.carf.org. We have achieved this mark of distinction and maintained it since1993.
Experts have commented that retirement communities in PA requiring an entrance fee present a risk, “perhaps a little risk, but still a risk.” Although this is true with any endeavor, we would point out that not living at Sherwood Oaks presents a risk, too. We believe that the enjoyment of the amenities, physical security, and the knowledge that unlimited continuing care is guaranteed at Sherwood Oaks far outweighs the small risk.
Please contact our marketing office at 1-800-642-2217 if you have questions about Sherwood Oaks. We are happy to provide any information you may need about all aspects of our retirement community and the many entrance options available at Sherwood Oaks.
